Trust Announces Practice Research Award Winner

Dr Margaret Watson has been announced winner of the Pharmacy Practice Research Trust's (the Trust) prestigious 2008 Practice Research Award. The award will be presented at the British Pharmaceutical Conference (BPC) 2008, on Tuesday 9 September, where Dr Watson will deliver a 30 minute lecture on her award-winning research.

The Trust's Practice Research Award is presented annually to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field of pharmacy practice research and has the potential to become a leader in their field. Dr Watson, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Aberdeen and Public Health Pharmacist for NHS Grampian, will receive the award in recognition of her work into the safe and effective supply and use of non-prescription medicines. Dr Watson said:

"I was delighted to be told that I had won the 2008 award. I have spent the past 14 years undertaking health services research and pharmacy practice research, the results of which I hope have and will help to inform future pharmacy practice and the safe and effective use of non-prescription medicines. I feel that this award recognises the contribution that my work, in collaboration with many other colleagues, has made. I have always regarded this as a prestigious award and feel honoured to be one of the winners."

Pharmacists Prevent Medication Errors and Save Money Through Clinical Interventions

Pharmacy OneSource, Inc., software as a service provider to more than 1,000 hospitals in the United States, announced today that its Quantifi clinical documentation program continues to be successful in helping clients show cost savings, establish benchmarks and trend clinical and quality pharmacy activities. Pharmacy OneSource has 29,118 users currently documenting in Quantifi who have recorded more than $88 million in cost savings in the second quarter of 2008.

"Since going live in July 2006 with Quantifi, pharmacy has multiplied its clinical event reporting by 20-fold across seven of our hospitals. Between March and June last year, MedStar pharmacists documented almost 16,000 patient-specific events, for a savings of $800,000, according to literature-based estimates." said Bonnie Levin, Corporate Assistant Vice President of Pharmacy Services for MedStar Health.

Quantifi users documented 1,680,086 interventions last quarter, which were associated with $8,139,570 actual dollar and $80,075,648 in risk avoidance savings by pharmacists through intervention. Real reduction in supply costs (such as a switch from atorvastatin to simvistatin) is an example of actual dollar savings; where avoided potential costs (an adverse drug event or an extended length of stay) represent risk avoidance savings.

Here are the Top Five Drugs associated with an adverse drug reaction recorded in Quantifi last quarter, and the total number of reports for each:

Warfarin 1620
Morphine Sulfate 480
Insulin Preparations 438
Hydromorphone 339
Vancomycin 281

National Pharmacy Goes Green with Packaging

Focus Express Mail Pharmacy, a leading Internet-based mail-order pharmacy specializing in diabetes care, is pleased to announce that its clients will now find their medical necessities protected by environmentally sound corn starch "popcorn" shipping filler. Unlike Styrofoam peanuts, the corn starch material dissolves in water or can be composted. This biodegradable material will decompose within just a few weeks.

"With increasing concerns about global climate change, we are eager to do our part to protect the environment for future generations. All companies need to think about sustainability and tread lightly on the Earth," said Joel Shpigel, R.Ph., CEO and Co-Founder of Focus Express Mail Pharmacy.

The new biodegradable packaging popcorn is made without plastic or polluting gases. It is FDA-approved, nontoxic and contains no ozone-depleting CFCs. "Focus Express Mail Pharmacy is proud to be part of the green revolution," said Shpigel. The company's green strategy is also slated to include recyclable paper filler.
